10 Effective Ways to Clean Your Carpet


Carpets accumulate dirt and grime over time. If you don’t clean them, they will start to have an unpleasant odor and can become a breeding ground for bacteria. It’s important to keep your carpets clean if you want to maintain the quality of your home. Here are 10 effective ways that will help get your carpet looking good as new!

Vacuum the carpet first to remove surface dirt.

The vacuum cleaner’s suction will pull up any loose dust and debris that is on top of or just below your carpets, making them look fresh again. Start at one end of the room and work towards the other side until you have covered it completely. It may take one  or two passes over each area of the carpet to remove all dirt.

Run a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment on your carpets.

This will help get rid of any dust that has accumulated in the fabric, giving them a fresh smell and removing dead skin cells from deep within the fibers so they look great again!

Clean the carpet with a steam cleaner.

This will help to remove any stains that are on the surface and can help sanitize your carpets. Start by sprinkling baking soda over the area you want to clean, then use hot water in conjunction with liquid detergent in order to create suds. Use your vacuum cleaner attachment (or hand-held vacuum cleaner) to remove the suds and dirt.

Spot clean stains with a mixture of vinegar, water, and dish soap (or an all natural cleaning solution). 

Use this in conjunction with your vacuum cleaner or hand-held vacuum cleaner to get rid of any ground in dirt that remains on your carpet. You can also use this same mixture to spot clean upholstery in your car.

Mix a solution of water and lemon juice or vinegar (using one part each).

Pour this over the stain you want to remove, then scrub it with a brush before letting it air dry or using your vacuum cleaner attachment (or hand held vacuum cleaner) to suck the liquid off.

Use an enzymatic cleaner to remove pet stains or food spills.

All you need is a small squirt and the spill should be gone.

Combine baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap (or all natural cleaning solution)

In equal parts for a carpet deodorizer that will also help remove some grease build up.

Use a rubber ice scraper to get the snow and dirt off:

Off your carpet before you vacuum or shampoo it with cold water, dish soap (or all natural cleaning solution) and vinegar in equal parts.

To make your own stain remover

For oily stains on carpets, add one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent  or dish soap to a quart of cold water, mix well then apply it with a sponge.

Bleach is also an option for removing tough stains

On carpets including blood or urine from animals so long as you dilute the bleach at least 50:50 ratio and keep away from any traffic areas.
